The Housing Choice Voucher Program (also known as Section 8) provides tenant-based rental assistance, in the form of a voucher, to low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities for rental units chosen by the tenant in the private market. The Housing Authority provides payments directly to participating property owners to offset the cost difference between tenant payments and unit rent. Program applicants choose from a variety of housing options, ranging from apartments, duplexes, single-family homes, town homes, and mobile homes.
Participants pay at least 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent or a minimum rent amount of $50.00, whichever is greater. No participant is allowed to pay more than 40% of their adjusted monthly income when they first become a participant.
