About Us
Welcome to the Watertown Housing Authority website. This website is to assist you with information regarding the federally subsidized low-income programs we administer.
The WHA is a public non-profit which receives funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The WHA’s jurisdiction covers Codington County and the city of Watertown.
The Watertown Housing Authority was created according to South Dakota State Law in 1972. In response of a need for elderly and disabled low income housing in the Watertown community, local volunteers pursued the process of acquiring government funding for housing construction through the Department of Housing & Urban development. The city of Watertown was granted the development funds for a 60-unit Hi-Rise and 25 individual scattered family houses.
The WHA also administers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The Section 8 program allows extremely low and very low income families to obtain rental housing assistance in the private market.
The WHA is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor of Watertown. The Mayor also appoints a City Council member liaison. This board sets policies for the agency.
It is our goal to assist you with your housing questions and needs. Thus we hope our website will help you locate decent, safe, sanitary and affordable housing for you and family.
Thank you,
Watertown Housing Authority Staff and Board of Commissioners
